A unique surgery performed by the team of Prof. Dr. Alexander Oscar managed to save the vision of 35-year-old Valeri Tsankov after a part of a nail pierced his eye while he was working. The doctors emphasized that just 1-2 more millimeters would have led to serious and irreversible damage.
The incident occurred on March 3, when Valeri was working on a construction site. While setting up formwork, he was hammering steel nails into concrete when the last nail broke, and part of it ended up in his eye. Valeri was not wearing protective glasses, which led to the accident.
After being quickly admitted to the Eye Clinic of Aleksandrovska Hospital, the team of Prof. Dr. Alexander Oscar took over the case. The doctors quickly determined that the foreign object had pierced the sclera of the eye, being only a hair’s breadth away from penetrating deep into the eye, which would have caused serious complications. The surgery was performed by Dr. Vasil Haikin and Dr. Svetoslav Slavchev, who, with their skills and experience, managed to restore the patient’s vision.
After the surgery, Valeri is recovering well and although he is still in shock from the incident, his condition improves daily. However, the doctors advise him to be very cautious in the future and to wear protective glasses when working with dangerous tools and materials.
The specialists at the clinic remind that any eye trauma, no matter how insignificant it may seem, carries the risk of permanent vision damage, which may manifest even years later.
